St. Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church
1252 East Aurora Rd., Macedonia, Ohio 44056

A Brief History of Our Parish

By the Grace of our Merciful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church of Cleveland, Ohio stands tall as the first established parish of the Malankara Orthodox Church in the State of Ohio. The parish serves the Indian Orthodox faithful from Cleveland, Akron, Cincinnati, Columbus, Youngstown, Bowling Green and Pittsburgh areas.

Greater Cleveland has been blessed to have visits by our priests, bishops and even our Catholicos over the years.  In the early years there were only five Orthodox families in the area. In 1980, H.G. Dr.Paulose Mar Gregorios was in the area as a visiting professor at a local college.  His Grace Mar Gregorios. conducted the first Holy Qurbana in Cleveland. H.G. Dr.Thomas Mar Makarios also was present.

Since 1987 we have been conducting Holy Qurbana frequently.  In March 1993, the congregation was blessed to have the Apostolic Visit of the Catholicos of the East, H.G. Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II.  Over the years, several bishops and eminent priests visited Cleveland to celebrate the Holy Eucharist including H.G Mathews Mar Barnabas, H.G Mathews Mar Severios, H.G Abraham Mar Severios,H.G Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, H.G Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, H.G Zachariah Mar Theophilos, Rev.Dr.K.M.George and Rev.Dr.Johns Abraham Konat and many more. As a priest, H.G. Pulikkottil Dr. Geevarghese Mar Yulios had also visited Cleveland. Our parish also remembers the leadership of Rev. Fr. Philip Jacob, Vicar of St. Thomas Orthodox iin serving our small parish. Since 2000 we have been conducting Passion Week services every year, and this has been a true blessing for us.

On October 18, 2009, our Diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Alexios Mar Eusebius elevated this congregation as a parish.  Rev. Fr. John K. Vaidyan (Atlanta) was appointed as the first Vicar.  Achen’s devoted leadership and dedication for three years instilled a strong desire for a house of worship of our own.      Rev. Fr. James Cheriyan is our Vicar since November 2012.  James Achen’s devotion and enthusiasm have helped in the growth and development of our parish. Today, we have about 20 families as members. We continue to have Holy Qurbana twice a month and in the process of having Holy Qurbana every week. Under the leadership of Fr. James we have been having biweekly prayer meetings and Bible studies. The interest and involvement of our children and youth have tremendously increased with the encouragement and support of James Achen.     For the past 25 years, we had been renting chapels for our Holy Qurbana and other church services.  James Achen was instrumental in providing leadership to acquire a place of our own to worship the Lord. In December 2014, by the abundant grace of God, we were able to purchase a Church building in the city of Macedonia, Ohio. We humbly seek to glorify the Kingdom of God through our parish and welcome you to our midst whenever you are in the Cleveland Area.
